Liberal MP launches backbench push for plan to end veteran homelessness with Conservative, NDP support

As the parliamentary workday hits the halfway point, MPs are set to continue working their collective way through the government’s legislative to-do list when the House re-opens for business this afternoon, starting with Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s omnibus bid to implement his latest budget, which is now poised for third reading consideration after a lightning round of pro forma report stage votes that are currently scheduled to take place immediately after question period wraps up.

Later this evening, the House will hit pause on regular parliamentary programming to devote a second — and final — three-hour block to farewell speeches from MPs who aren’t running for re-election this fall.

ON & AROUND THE HILL

Liberal MP and veterans affairs committee chair Neil Ellis teams up with New Democrat Sheri Benson and Conservative Karen Vecchio, as well as representatives from the Royal Canadian Legion, Vets Canada, the Old Brewery Mission and the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness, to share the details of his private members’ motion calling on the government to come forward with “a plan and deadlines” to “end veteran homelessness,”  which has been seconded by Benson and Vecchio and, as per the advisory, “is supported by national veteran and homelessness organizations.” (1:40 p.m.)

OUTSIDE THE PRECINCT

Environment Minister Catherine McKenna celebrates World Environment Day with a midday announcement at the Dominion Arboretum.

Elsewhere in the capital region, Employment Minister Patty Hajdu joins Hull-Aylmer MP Greg Fergus for a tour of the First Peoples Innovation Centre, where the duo will outline the government’s efforts to “help Indigenous youth … gain the skills and experience they need for a fair chance at success.”

Later this evening, Infrastructure Minister François-Philippe Champagne headlines an evening reception to fill the coffers of the Ottawa—Vanier Federal Liberal Association, with local MP Mona Fortier also expected to be in attendance.
