The riding of Elgin-Middlesex-London is full of deserving individuals and organizations. To help pay tribute to Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations, local MP Karen Vecchio, and her provincial counterpart, MPP Jeff Yurek, are joining forces to give recognition where recognition is due.
On Sept. 10, the pair will be hosting a celebration marking the occasion under the Big Top in St. Thomas with the centerpiece of the event being a special presentation of 150 commemorative coins to selected individuals and organizations that have helped make the riding what it is today.
“We’re going to be honouring 150 constituents. It can be work related, volunteer related or just that you’re the best person in the world related,” said Vecchio. “What we want to do is honour people that make Elgin-Middlesex-London a great place to live.”
Echoing her sentiment, Yurek added this is a very important milestone for the country. “I think it’s important that we get the opportunity to recognize the individuals and organizations in our riding that have made Ontario and Canada great.”
To help them with the task of selecting the 150 recipients, Vecchio and Yurek are reaching out to the public and asking them to nominate worthy recipients who reside in the riding.
Some of the award categories include agriculture, educators, first responders and youth.
“I want people, whether they are a great store owner, or you know an excellent equestrian horse rider or they’re a hockey player or they’ve volunteered and coached for 50 years — those are the people to be recognized,” said Vecchio.
By opening the nomination process to the public, Yurek said they hope to see some names put forward that haven’t been honoured in this way before, which in all likelihood will make the list hard to pare down to 150. “I think you’re going to get a wider range of selections because there will be people out there nominating people they think are the unsung heroes of our riding and I look forward to seeing all those nominations coming in.”
Nominations are open to residents of Elgin-Middlesex-London only and submissions are due by Monday, July 24.
